Harris Corporation and Johns Hopkins Medicine have announced a joint venture to develop next-generation medical image management solutions. The collaboration brings together Harris' health information and security technologies with Johns Hopkins' clinical expertise to fuel innovations in medical image management. The venture will focus on developing medical image management solutions to be deployed by the Johns Hopkins Health System and later, to hospitals and health care providers around the country.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has implemented the IMS MAXIMS Order Communications Systems (OCS) solution to cut scan and X-ray order times from days to seconds.The solution will be used by nearly 800 staff across a dozen sites to order 150,000 examinations per year.In the previous paper-based system, it could take several days for an order to reach the appropriate person. Incomplete information or poor handwriting led to further complications in completing orders.

California Connects, a federally funded program designed to increase broadband access among underserved communities for improved access to resources like healthcare information, celebrated its official launch Wednesday at American River College in Sacramento.Officials said the debut of the program marks the start of a multi-year effort to address California's digital divide and help increase the number of broadband Internet users throughout the state by more than 61,000 people.

Americans may not be embracing social media as a way to communicate with their providers, but they aren't opposed to using the Internet for more administrative functions such as billing, accessing their records and setting appointments. This is according to a national Capstrat-Public Policy Polling survey, which found that more than five of every six respondents (85 percent) said they would not use social media or instant messaging channels for medical communication if their doctors offered it.
