iPad-based clinical reference technology that's been downloaded by more than 100,000 users since late 2012 has been ported to iPhone and Android versions.
Physicians Interactive has announced the launch of its Omnio application for those platforms. The company is targeting all healthcare professionals with a predominant focus on prescribers — specifically physicians and nurse practitioners.
The app provides one-touch access to drug information, condition overviews from The Merck Manual for Healthcare Professionals, more than 500 medical calculators and updates from medical literature.
"Mobile technologies are advancing in such a way that we need to be flexible enough to meet the future needs and demand of healthcare professionals," said Gautam Gulati, PI's chief medical and innovation officer.
Donato Tramuto, the company's CEO, said the new versions build on the success of the iPad user experience.
“Medical professionals are demonstrating that Omnio performs well within their workflow, with daily open rates for the app and the time spent on each visit growing tremendously over the past several months. Now, clinicians will be able to access, digest and share the same information they need to treat patients — immediately, right at the point of care — through their mobile phones as well,” he said in a news release.
The platform is a source of convergence for all this information, said Gulati.
"We've leveraged technology to curate the information and organize it in ways that are specific to physicians' specialties. We layered that on top of different types of social infrastructure to deliver a sense of personalization to our end-users," he said.
PI has 2.7 million users on a legacy platform called Skyscape Medical Resources. "As we release this next version of Omnio, everyone with a Skyscape application is essentially going to be converted over to Omnio," said Gulati. "So we'll see a huge number of users on the Omnio platform as a result of this release."
Gulati noted that Skyscape Medical Resources will be relaunched as Skyscape Medical Library — a new app focused on education.
Omnio for iOS 7 or higher is available as a free download through the iTunes Store. The version for Android 2.2 or higher will be available for download through the Google Play Store by April 25, according to PI.
Both versions offer a free three-month trial version of the Merck Manual within the app.
