This month's #mhimss tweet chat focused on user interface and user experience tips from mHIMSS volunteer members, UI/UX Workgroup Chair Nardo Manaloto @nmanaloto and Mark Casselman @markcasselman, among others. Today's discussion presented four key questions. Here are some of the responses and insights tweeted from engaged #mhimss members.

Question 1: What #UI #UX factors serve as barriers to #EHR adoption and how can #mobile help? #mhimss

Q1: #UI & #UX factors such as application workflow,user interactions,information architecture,and engagement #mobile #EHR #mHimss #healthITCare Circles
#mhimss - i think how information is presented becomes a #UX #UI barrier. needs customization by different user types.Nardo Manaloto
#mhimss - even our regulatory requirements for HIPAA, ADA, etc pose as #UX #UI barriers because we are adding layersNardo Manaloto
A1 Workflow, workflow, workflow - #Mobile has the promise to put the right info at the right place quickly, easily, if well designed #mhimssMark Combs
A1: Great point @markdcombs! Workflow is King for #UI #UX #mhimssDavid Collins
@markcombs A1 I agree. Both from a provider and patient perspective. #mhimssRodney Nelson
A1 mobile applications can provide an easier quicker view of the data. EHRs can be intimidating #mhimssRodney Nelson

Question 2: What #UI #UX features do providers need/want to improve #adoption of #mhealth technologies? #mhimss

A2: Need to keep both the provider and consumer/patient in mind for #UI and #UX as they have different needs and expecations! #mhimssDavid Collins
A2 Must fit the form factor; Citrix on an iPad for a non-app isn't always the right answer #mhimssMark Combs
#mhimss A2 - providers want standard sets of iconography to communicate betterNardo Manaloto
A2 @mhimss #ui #ux design tenet: Type less! http://ow.ly/hyaav #mhimssTom Martin
A2: It is important to provide training resources via youtube or other for patients to use the technology. Include in the plan #mhimssRodney Nelson
Q2: Avoid scrolling. Simplify ergonomics. Design instrument control interfaces. Leverage GPS proximity. #UI #UX #mHealth #mHimss #healthCare Circles

Question 3: How do you educate stakeholders on the benefits of #design? #ui #ux #mhimss

A3 Include the stakeholders in the #design! #ui #ux #mhimssMark Combs
A3 Budget for #ui #ux firms. Design and interface are keys to #mhealth adoption by users. #mhimssTom Martin
A3: Use proof-of-concepts to help educate on the UI experience #mhimssRodney Nelson
A3: additionally, POC can demonstrate the value of iconography, etc. and can help to justify time invested for the UI/UX. #mhimssRodney Nelson
#mhimss A3 - i would say show them the outcome of a non designed project vs a user centered designed project. that shows clear benefits.Nardo Manaloto
A3: Keep an open format to receive feedback, e.g.,intranet site to allow for feedback for ongoing revisions and updates #mhimssDavid Collins

Question 4: Who is needed on the #UI #UX team to design a quality product optimizing UI/UX? #mhimss

A4 designer, obviously... Be sure to include end users and project leads in the design phase. #ui #ux #mhimssTom Martin
