Whereas startups and investors ruled Sunday and Monday homed in on the next big things in healthcare, today’s theme will be among the most discussed in healthcare overall and mHealth in particular.

“Patient engagement around the globe is a central tenet of the mHealth Summit and takes center stage on Tuesday,” said Rich Scarfo, HIMSS Media's vice president of events and director of the mHealth Summit.

To that end, the roster of morning keynotes includes Kathy Calvin, president and CEO of the UN Foundation, Astrid Krag, Denmark's minister of health, and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grammeen Movement and an expert in microlending.

“This theme is underscored through five executive spotlights,” Scarfo said. Immediately following the keynotes, those include Aetna CarePass, Intel, IMS Health and CVS Caremark.

Once again, the morning’s sessions wrap up just before 11 a.m., the concurrent events begin right after that and the show floor opens at noon.

Taking a deep dive into the national health IT interoperability standards Denmark instituted last year with its National Action Plan for Telemedicine will be Chuck Parker, executive director of the Continua Health Alliance, the organization whose interoperability design guidelines the Danish government used, and Claus Neilsen, business development manager at DELTA, a Danish research and technology organization.

The U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) will hold a town hall on consumer engagement from 1-2:30, wherein federal officials intend to discuss the three A’s of engagement (Access, Action and Attitudes). Also expect to learn about how the ONC expects meaningful use stage 2 to sculpt the very notion of patient engagement.

“Thirteen sessions cover various aspects of engagement and delivering value,” Scarfo said. “And that is in addition to six affiliate sessions toward the end of the day sponsored by ABA Section Science & Technology Law, B2Group, CRE – Centerstone Research Institute, mHealth Alliance, mHIMSS and GSMA.”

Among those late sessions, running from 5-6 p.m., is “Beyond Bihar: Lessons learned in bringing mHealth to scale in India,” sure to continue the day’s theme of patient engagement around the globe.
