Happy Head, a company specializing in hair preservation and restoration, has launched the StrandIQ System, a DNA-based approach to promoting hair growth.
The StrandIQ System includes a DNA Starter Kit, an at-home cheek swab to decode how a person's unique biology may influence hair and scalp health.
By using individual genetic analysis, the company says that, in just a couple of weeks, customers will receive customized reports that translate genetic predispositions into actionable insights – including how the body processes specific nutrients, such as biotin, to understand potential sensitivities to common botanical and chemical growth ingredients, such as minoxidil, finasteride and dutasteride.
Key features of the product include:
An advanced genetic examination;
Insights into 33 traits related to hair, scalp and micronutrients;
DNA-based recommendations;
An at-home convenience cheek swab collection with secure return shipping; and
Genetic analysis conducted in CLIA-certified labs with HIPAA-compliant privacy standards.
"The goal of StrandIQ was to combine cutting-edge genetic science with our proven clinical expertise to help people make informed hair health choices," said Ajaykumar Gopal, president of Happy Head, in a statement.
Gopal noted that research indicates that 41% of new Rx treatments in the U.S. are ineffective because they are not tailored to the individual. "We understand that genes play an essential role in hair health, but they are only one piece of the reliable-outcomes puzzle," Gopal said.
THE LARGER TREND
Other companies in the hair loss space include Numan, which in July announced that it had raised $60 million in funding. The financing round was an extension of the company's Series B round, which included a $30 million equity investment led by Big Pi Ventures. The round also included $27 million in growth capital from HSBC.
The funds were used for expansion into the female health space, as well as more screening and preventive care programs. Numan offers a digital subscription service addressing men's health issues, including hair and weight loss, sexual health, supplements and diagnostics.
In 2022, meanwhile, Hims & Hers rolled out two new products focused on the issue in women. Customers were able to access a topical finasteride and minoxidil spray, as well as oral spironolactone, a pill that can decrease androgen levels. Users can also take a hair care assessment, which will give customers more information about their options.
